"In every conceivable manner, the family is the link to our past,
the bridge to our future." - Alex Haley
Hi! My name is Gloria. It was given to me by my adoptive parents, Anya
and Zindel Oxenhorn (AKA Hannah and Sidney), may they
rest in peace.
Before that I had a "what I would have called you name." My birth
mother would have named me Elizabeth after Elizabeth Taylor whom
she
found appealing.
People say I'm a woman of many hats and that's probably true. An avid
reader. A writer. A book reviewer. An award-winning editor. A daughter.
A wife. Amother of three. A baby boomer. A cancer survivor. A reunited adoptee. The oldest of ten birth siblings combined but raised as an only
child.
As a reunited adoptee my goal is to publish my adoption memoir
so I can share my experience with others.
I
grew up in both the Crown Heights and Flatbush areas of Brooklyn,
New York, and attended both public and private schools. At the age of
fifteen I moved
to Tel Aviv, Israel with my adoptive mother where she
passed away in
1979. Two months later I married. My two sons are
Sabras, both born in
Israel; my daughter is American born and bred,
like her mother.
In
July 1990 I battled Hodgkin's Disease. Since radiation therapy ended
in Oct 1990 I have been cancer free. Now, life can't be that dull, so in
Dec 2005 I was diagnosed with T-2 Diabetes which is being kept under
control with diet and exercise alone, at least for now.
I currently live in Washington state with my husband and our eldest son.
Another son lives and works in San Francisco, CA. Our daughter, the youngest,
married in March 2009 and is living in Washington not far from us.

Why PineTree Whispers?
In the Hebrew language my last name, Oren, means pine tree. Since I wear hearing aids, I don't always hear what's being said; many times nothing more than a whisper. The pine tree has many stories (whispers) to tell, but how many people hear them? I want to hear those whispers, but most of all I want people to hear mine. | |
